GAZ Group starts serial production of gas engines

Yaroslavl Motor Plant (YAMZ) Avtodiesel of GAZ Group, a company of Basic Element, a major most diversified industrial group in Russia, started serial production of YAMZ gas engines complying to Eur-5 emission standard. This is the most modern national development of gas engines for trucks, passenger, agricultural and road construction vehicles. The launch of the project was timed with the 100-th anniversary of a major engine manufacturer in Russia. The official launch of production was attended by V.V. Putin, RF President, and O.V. Deripaska, Chairman of Basic Element Supervisory Board and main owner of GAZ Group. Within the frame work of the visit to Yaroslavl Motor Plant, V.V. Putin had a meeting with the employees of the plant.

- I congratulate the citizens not only of Yaroslavl but also of Russia with the one hundredth anniversary of Avtodiesel. This plant born under the decree of Nicholas II, is today one of the most front-edge plants not only in our country but also worldwide. I would say the best one in the world - especially if we assess the level of the production and product quality at the new site producing medium-duty YAMZ-530 engines. I have seen here the most modern practices and effective technologies. This is a good example of the state support we rendered to the plant in 2008 that was correctly perceived by the employees of the enterprise. Yes, we have always supported and will support the hi-tech industries, however, the success of YAMZ, including the launch of gas engine production today, became possible thanks to excellent work of all GAZ Group employees and Yaroslavl Motor Plant. I am sure the new engine has an excellent future.

The YAMZ-530 engines comply to the best global standards in terms of specific power, torque, NVH parameters and fuel consumption. And thanks to localization of the components of YAMZ-530 diesel and gas engines that we have been implementing for the last two years, we have kept the initial engine cost, which will help to offer affordable prices for the customers of gas transport with YAMZ engines as compared to their foreign analogues.

Yaroslavl Motor Plant of GAZ Group launched serial production of YAMZ-530 CNG engines using compressed natural gas (CNG). The vehicles fueled by methane have the operational costs that are 40 - 50% lower versus diesel and petrol engines and help to lower the CO emission by 5-6 times.

The medium-duty in-line 4- and 6-cylinder YAMZ CNG engines with 150 - 312 h.p. complying to Euro-5 and capable of Euro-6, are using the front edge design solutions in terms of packaging, control, main systems characteristics, providing for their reliability and efficiency. YAMZ-530 CNG engines van be used in various trucks, passenger, road construction and agricultural vehicles. The engines possess a high export potential.

The characteristics of YAMZ-530 CNG engines match the technical level of the best global manufacturers. The prototypes have been put through complex tests in specialized test boxes of Avtodiesel and then confirmed their reliability in the composition of Ural trucks, PAZ and LIAZ buses and other GAZ vehicles. The engine durability depending on its version is up to 1 mln km.

The gas engines are produced in one technological process flow together with YAMZ-530 diesel engines at the most modern engine production site in Europe. The plant with the total area of 57 thous. sq. m. equipped with modern technological and engineering machinery started work in 2012. The production process was certified according to the requirements of the international quality system ISO/TS 16949. The automation level of the technological complex reaches 90%. The engineering infrastructure allows fulfillment of the most stringent requirements to the work environment in terms of cleanliness, temperature, pressure, lighting, noise and vibrations. The total capacity of YAMZ-530 gas and diesel engine production is 20 000 engines per year, with a potential to increase it up to 40-50 thousand. During the implementation of the project, a project team was created consisting of employees with a considerable potential for development, high educational and professional level (higher education - 72%, mastering of skills and methods of the international system ISO/TS 16949 – 100%). The total investments into the construction of the plant and preproduction of YAMZ-530 diesel and gas engines amounted to 11 bln rubles.

Within the framework of the project of organizing production of YAMZ-530 diesel and gas engines work is being carried out to localize their components including hi-tech ones, together with placing their production at Russian plants. As of today, the plants of GAZ Group and other manufacturers have localized a number of components that were previously made in Europe, including the cylinder block casting, the crankshaft gorging, the turbocharger, the camshaft, etc. Localization of components of YAMZ-530 engines helps to achieve high competitive cost of the product keeping its quality at the level of global analogues, to reduce the dependence of the plant economy on the fluctuations of the foreign currency exchange rate and to increase the production volumes of the Russian suppliers.

The launch of the new project at YAMZ was timed to the celebrations of the 100-th anniversary of the plant established in 1916 by the Decree of the Emperor on building 6 automotive plants in the country. At the first stages of its development, Yaroslavl plant specialized in production of trucks, tippers, trolleybuses and other automotive vehicles. Establishment of YAMZ became the starting milestone in the development of the entire Russian automotive industry: some plants known today in Russia and CIS emerged thanks to Avtodiesel that became the scientific research initiative site giving birth to popular vehicle brands handed over under cooperation within the national economy to other plants of the Soviet Union. In early 2000-ies, Yaroslavl Motor Plant joined the machine-building assets of Oleg Deripaska that were united into a holding of commercial vehicles production GAZ Group. Yaroslavl Motor Plant today is one of the most modern production facilities in Europe and the leading national manufacturer of engines for freight, passenger, road construction, agricultural vehicles, a center of engineering and production competences in the industry, a leader in localization of a modern component base for the Russian machine-building.
